Why do Catholics pray to Mary and the saints?

1. Intercession

Mary and the saints, being in the presence of God in heaven, are able to intercede on behalf of those on earth. Just as we ask friends and family to pray for us, we can turn to the saints for their prayers, trusting in their closeness to God. Their intercession does not replace Christ’s unique role as the one Mediator, but rather flows from their union with Him. Through Christ, who is the source of all grace, their prayers are made powerful and effective.

Biblical Foundations of Intercession
  • Intercessory Prayer Among Believers
    • James 5:16: “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful.”
    • This verse highlights the power of intercessory prayer, indication that the prayers of righteous individuals, including those in heaven, can assist us.
  • Heavenly Intercession
    • Revelation 5:8: This passage describes the saints in heaven offering prayers of the holy ones, symbolized by golden bowls full of incense, before the lamb.
    • It suggest that the saints present our prayers to God as part of their heavenly worship.
  • Communion of Saints
    • 1 Corinthians 12:12-27: St. Paul speaks about the Body of Christ, emphasizing how all members are interconnected, sharing in each other’s joys and sufferings.
    • This passage implies a spiritual solidarity that includes the saints in heaven.
  • Mary’s Intercessory Role
    • John 2:1-11: At the wedding at Cana, Mary intercedes with her Son, Jesus, on behalf of the wedding hosts. Her request results in Jesus’ first miracle, showcasing her intercessory role.

2. Communion of Saints

The Church teaches that all members of the Church—those on earth (the Church Militant), those in purgatory (the Church Suffering), and those in heaven (the Church Triumphant)—are spiritually united. This communion allows for mutual support through prayer.

Biblical Foundations for the Communion of Saints
  • Unity in the Body of Christ
    • 1 Corinthians 12:12-27: St Paul describes believers as members of one body in Christ, emphasizing the interconnectedness and mutual care among Christians.
    • Romans 12:4-5: Paul speaks of the Church as one body in Christ, where members belong to one another.
  • The Heavenly Witnesses
    • Hebrews 12:1: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin…” This verse evokes the image of those who have gone before us in faith, encouraging and supporting us from heaven.
  • Intercessory Prayer
    • Revelation 5:8: Describes the heavenly beings holding bowls of incense, representing the prayers of the saints, indicating an active role in intercession.
    • James 5:16: “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective,” underscoring the power of the saints’ intercession.

3. Mary’s Unique Role

Mary, as the Mother of God and the foremost of all saints, holds a special place in Catholic devotion. Her role in salvation history and her close relationship with Christ make her a powerful intercessor.

5. Enhancing Relationship with God

Praying to the saints and Mary ultimately leads Catholics closer to God. They act as friends and guides in the spiritual journey, encouraging a deeper unity with Christ.
