Biography

St. Léonie Aviat was a French religious sister and the founder of the Little Sisters of the Sacred Heart (Petites Sœurs du Sacré-Cœur), a religious community dedicated to the education of girls and the care of the poor. She was born into a devout Catholic family, and from a young age, she felt called to religious life, but initially struggled with the idea of entering a convent.

In her early years, Léonie was educated at a local school and spent time working to support her family. Despite several personal struggles, she eventually found spiritual direction under the guidance of Father Jean-Claude Colin, who was the founder of the Society of Mary (Marists). Inspired by his teachings and deep faith, Léonie felt the call to dedicate her life to God and entered the Marist Sisters’ community.

However, after some time, Léonie realized that she had a vision of establishing a new religious community focused on the education of young girls and assisting in the care of the poor, particularly through the nurturing of Christian values. In 1871, she founded the Little Sisters of the Sacred Heart with the goal of forming young women to serve as educators, caretakers, and agents of charity. Her spiritual depth and commitment to education allowed the community to grow rapidly, and the Little Sisters began their work in various parts of France.

St. Léonie was known for her personal holiness, her care for the spiritual and material needs of the poor, and her deep devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She emphasized the importance of prayer, simplicity, and humility in the daily lives of her sisters and had a profound impact on the religious community and society.
