Biography
Saint John the Baptist was the forerunner of Jesus Christ and the last prophet of the Old Testament era. He was the son of Zechariah, a Jewish priest, and Elizabeth, who was a relative of the Virgin Mary. His birth was miraculous, as his parents were elderly and childless until an angel foretold his conception.
John lived a life of austere devotion, wearing camel’s hair, eating locusts and wild honey, and preaching repentance in the wilderness. He baptized Jesus in the Jordan River, proclaiming Him as the “Lamb of God.” His bold condemnation of King Herod Antipas’ unlawful marriage to Herodias led to his imprisonment and eventual execution by beheading at Herodias’ request.
