Biography

St. Christopher is one of the most popular saints, particularly as the patron saint of travelers. Although much of his story is based on legend and not historical documentation, his tale is rich in meaning and symbolism.

According to the Golden Legend (a collection of hagiographies compiled in the 13th century), St. Christopher was a giant and a pagan who originally lived in Canaan. He was a man of great strength, and he sought to serve the most powerful king he could find. Initially, he served a king who was terrified of the devil, but upon witnessing the king’s fear of the devil, Christopher decided to serve the devil himself, believing him to be the strongest power in the world.

However, when Christopher witnessed the devil cowering in fear of Christ, he realized that Christ was the true power. He then sought to serve Christ, and the story goes that he became a Christian and took on a mission of helping people cross a dangerous river. St. Christopher was known for his incredible strength and would carry travelers across the river, ensuring they were safe from floods and dangers.

One day, a child came to him and asked to be carried across the river. As he carried the child, the weight of the child grew heavier and heavier, and it felt like Christopher was carrying the weight of the world. The child revealed himself to be Christ, and St. Christopher’s faith and service were confirmed.

He was eventually martyred for his Christian faith under the Emperor Decius. His story has been embraced for centuries, and he has become a beloved figure for people seeking protection during travel.
