Biography

St. André of Montreal, born Alfred Bessette, was a Canadian priest who became known for his deep faith, simplicity, and his devotion to caring for the sick and poor. He entered the Congregation of Holy Cross (C.S.C.) in 1870, where he took the name André. Although he was poorly educated and frail in health, he was known for his profound spirituality and unwavering trust in God.

As a brother in the Congregation of Holy Cross, Brother André was assigned to work as a doorman at the College of Notre-Dame in Montreal. Despite his humble position, his life was filled with prayer, and he quickly became known for his healing ministry. People from all walks of life came to him for help, and through his intercession, many miracles were reported. He had a great devotion to St. Joseph and was instrumental in the construction of the Oratory of St. Joseph on Mount Royal, one of the largest Catholic shrines in the world.

Brother André’s reputation as a healer, as well as his humility and love for the poor and suffering, earned him great respect. He died on January 6, 1937, and his funeral was attended by thousands of people. After his death, the miracles attributed to him continued to grow, and he was eventually beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1982 and canonized a saint by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.
