The Prayer of Tobias and Sarah
The Prayer of Tobias and Sarah teaches that marriage is a sacred covenant established by God, meant to be rooted in faith, love, and mutual respect—not in lust or selfish motives. It expresses a couple’s desire to live together in peace, mercy, and lifelong unity under God’s blessing.
Tobias began by saying:
“Blessed are You, O God of our fathers;
blessed be Your holy and glorious name forever and ever.
Let the heavens and all Your creatures bless You.
You made Adam, and You gave him his wife Eve
to be his helper and support;
and from these two the human race has sprung.
You said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone;
let us make him a helper like himself.’
And now, Lord, You know that I take this my wife
not because of lust,
but with sincerity of heart.
Grant that we may find mercy
and grow old together.
Amen.”
