Biography

Saint Peter, originally named Simon, was a fisherman from Galilee and one of Jesus’ twelve apostles. Jesus gave him the name Cephas (Peter), meaning “rock”, and declared, “You are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my Church” (Matthew 16:18).

He was part of Jesus’ inner circle, witnessing the Transfiguration, the Agony in the Garden, and many miracles. Despite denying Jesus three times during the Passion, Peter repented and became a fearless leader of the early Church.

After Jesus’ resurrection, Peter played a crucial role in spreading Christianity, preaching in Jerusalem, Antioch, and Rome. He was the first pope and was martyred in Rome, crucified upside down at his request, feeling unworthy to die like Christ.

His remains are believed to be in St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City.
