Biography

Saint James the Greater was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus and the son of Zebedee and Salome. He was the brother of Saint John the Evangelist, and together, they were called the “Sons of Thunder” (Boanerges) because of their passionate zeal.

As one of Jesus’ closest disciples, James was present for major events in Christ’s ministry, including:

  • The Transfiguration (with Peter and John)
  • The raising of Jairus’ daughter
  • Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane

He was the first apostle to be martyred, executed by order of King Herod Agrippa I around 44 AD. According to tradition, his remains were later transported to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where his tomb became one of the greatest pilgrimage sites in Christianity: the Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James).

Miracles & Important Events

  • Apparition at the Battle of Clavijo (844 AD): According to legend, he appeared on horseback to aid the Christian army against the Moors, earning him the title Santiago Matamoros (“Moor-slayer”).
  • His body miraculously discovered in Galicia, Spain, leading to the establishment of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage.
  • The Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James) remains a major Christian pilgrimage route.
