Biography

Saint Damien de Veuster was a Belgian missionary priest from the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. He is best known for his selfless service to the leper colony on the Hawaiian island of Molokai.

Born Jozef De Veuster, he entered religious life and took the name Damien. In 1864, he was sent to Hawaii as a missionary, where he was ordained as a priest. At the time, leprosy (Hansen’s disease) was spreading in Hawaii, and the government forcibly exiled infected individuals to the Kalaupapa settlement on Molokai. Seeing their suffering, Father Damien volunteered in 1873 to serve among them, knowing he was at great risk of contracting the disease.

For 16 years, he ministered to the spiritual, medical, and social needs of the lepers, building churches, homes, and schools, and advocating for better treatment of the afflicted. He did not just care for them—he lived among them. In 1884, he himself contracted leprosy, but continued his mission until his death on April 15, 1889.

His heroic sacrifice was widely recognized, and he was beatified in 1995 by Pope John Paul II and later canonized in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI.
