What are the seven Sacraments?

Sacred signs instituted by Christ to give grace, marking the spiritual milestones in a Catholic’s journey.

Sacraments of Christian Initiation

  • Baptism

Baptism is the first sacrament of initiation and the gateway to the Christian life. It cleanses a person from original sin, welcomes them into the Church, and marks the beginning of their faith journey in Christ.

  • Eucharist

The Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion, is the sacrament in which Catholics receive the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. It nourishes the soul, unites believers with Christ, and strengthens the Church as one body.

  • Confirmation

Confirmation deepens the grace of Baptism by sealing the recipient with the gift of the Holy Spirit. It strengthens faith, empowers a person to live as a witness of Christ, and more fully unites them to the Church.

Sacraments of Healing

  • Reconciliation

Also called Confession or Penance, Reconciliation is the sacrament through which sins are forgiven. By confessing to a priest and receiving absolution, the penitent is restored to grace and reconciled with God and the Church.

  • Anointing of the Sick

This sacrament offers spiritual and sometimes physical healing to those who are seriously ill or near death. Through prayers and anointing with holy oil, the person receives peace, strength, and the grace of Christ’s presence.

Sacraments of Service

  • Marriage

Marriage is a sacred covenant between a man and a woman, reflecting the love between Christ and the Church. It is a lifelong union that is open to life and rooted in mutual self-giving and fidelity.

  • Holy Orders

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which men are ordained as deacons, priests, or bishops. It confers the grace and responsibility to serve the Church by preaching, celebrating the sacraments, and shepherding God’s people.
